Being a dutiful consumer I’ve learnt to be alert but not alarmed, in fact given some of the destinations I’ve been in lately, it could be said that I’ve got a PHD in it. So it’s a safe bet that given an instruction I will follow it. Recently though I was down in Fremantle and came across this sign which left me pondering.

After a few minutes a man wandered past with a dilapidated looking pushbike. I smiled my best smile and raised a knowing eyebrow hoping I looked alert, not alarmed, but ready for whatever was needed. Sadly he simply looked bewildered and moved on, clearly with no intention of heeding the sign.

All interesting possibilities, none of which appeared after a further ten minutes. Disappointed I tentatively moved away from the sign, while under the gaze of two young policemen who meandered past with no regard for the sign, or my blatant disregard for it. And so I am left pondering …
- Did I really need to heed the Alert/Alarmed warning after all?
- Only in Fremantle.
- Should anyone be in Fremantle and find out what the sign is for I’d love to know. It’s near the E Shed Markets.
