The movie Christmas Karma takes the classic tale of A Christmas Carol and dips it in Bollywood musical magic
On the eve of Christmas Day Londoners are getting ready to party. Everyone’s in high spirits. Well, everyone except Mr. Sood (Kunal Nayyar), a wealthy British-Indian tycoon whose focus is firmly on the bottom line.
On Christmas Eve, three spectral guides arrive at Sood’s home.
Eva Longoria as the Ghost of Christmas Past steps through his past and uncovers a scared, hurt young boy.
Billy Porter come next as the exuberant Present, showing Sood the impact of his decisions on others, particularly his second in command.
Lastly Boy George floats in as the chilling Future, predicting a tragic future for Sood unless he changes his ways.
As the credits rolled, I pondered:
- We all know the story, but we’ve never seen it presented like this;
- The movie touches on greed, leadership, family, multiculturalism, community and most of all compassion;
- The soundtrack will have you bopping along to bhangra beats, gospel harmonies, rap interludes and beloved carols;
- Danny Dyer is a standout as the cabbie;
- As with the original it’s a timely reminder about what’s really important.
