The movie No Other Choice is a unique, funny look at how far you’d go to get a job.
When we meet Man-soo (Lee) he’s living in his old family home, a home he’s save up to buy. A loving family man he lives there with his wife, son, daughter and two dogs.
Every weekday he says goodbye to his family and heads to his job at paper manufacturer, Solar Paper. A respected employee he’s moved up to management level and even won an award.
One day his bosses explain that the company is not doing well, there will be job cuts. Not agreeing with the decision, he stands his ground only to find his own job is on the line.
Unemployed Man-soo tries of a position at rival paper company Moon Paper, but within three months, having heard nothing, things are not looking good.
His wife Mi-ri (Son Yejin) does her best to tighten the household expenses, with hilarious consequences, but soon they have to face reality. The family home will have to be put up for sale.
Desperate to keep the home Man-soo researches who his main competitors are. He narrows it down to a handful of similarly out of work, desperate men. What he does next is genius.
His cunning plan involves inventing his own paper company and putting an ad in the paper of an executive position. Lots of people apply, including the key competitors. With their job applications in front of him he has all the information he needs. But rather than simply write a better resume he takes it one step further. He decides to eliminate his competition.
As the credits rolled I pondered:
- No Other Choice is a refreshingly new story;
- A unique mixture, just when you think it’s a drama it presents several humorous angles;
- The movie touches on office politics, family, ambition and times when you have no other choice;
- It asks the question, how far would you go to get the job you want and save your family;
- Long at over two hours, the last half is worth the slower first half;
- Definitely work seeking out.
