The Friend is a truly beautiful movie destined to become one of those movies you keep on your repeat list. Tugs and swells the heart.

Iris (Naomi Watts) is a New York writer faced with the usual follow-up book deadline and being unable to find inspiration. Even her friend and mentor Walter (Bill Murray) can’t help. When Walter suddenly passes things get even more difficult.
Part of that difficulty comes in the form of Apollo a 150-pound Great Dane (the beautiful and highly talented Bing). Apollo was Walter’s pride and joy and for reasons that Iris cannot fathom, he left the dog to her.
This is perplexing as Iris has never owned a dog and she lives in a one-bedroom flat that doesn’t allow dogs. How does one hide a mini horse? And what does one do when faced with eviction because of the dog?
As the audience tried their tears on the way out I pondered:
- The Friend is a real surprise package in a very good way;
- The movie explores friendship, grief and healing. It raises the question, what if you could ask those who’ve passed, a question?
- It also provides one of the best explorations into the very difficult subject of suicide, everyone should see the movie for this alone;
- There will be tears both happy and sad;
- Watts and Murry and fantastic but Bing steals every scene.
Season starts July 31 at Luna Leederville, Luna on SX and Windsor. There’s a special advance screening on July 24.
