The Shrouds is a surprise package of a movie. Offering a new look on how we handle grief, it’s also espionage thriller.

The Shrouds

Four years after the passing of his wife Becca’s (Diane Kruger), brilliant entrepreneur Karsh (Vincent Cassel) is still in the midst of grief. His pain is somewhat tempered through his latest invention, shrouds.

The shrouds have been designed using the latest technology. When a loved one dies their body is encased in a heavy-duty shroud before being buried. Connected to the latest mobile phone software, the shroud allows mourners to log onto a website where they can watch what’s happening in the grave.

Karsh is not alone in his grief. Becca’s sister (also Kruger) is a large part of his life, especially her conspiracies about Becca’s death. His friend Maury (Guy Pearce) helped him design the software while being married to Becca’s sister, though they are in the middle of a divorce. Add in Becca’s specialist who just so happens to be a past boyfriend.

Everything seems to be going well. The cemetery where the shrouds are located is filling up and the shrouds are becoming a sort after commodity around the globe. Karsh is developing shroud cemeteries around the world.

One night a patch of graves are vandalized, the feeds to the coffins lost, including that of his wife. Who is behind the targeted attack?

As the images faded I pondered:

  1. Having been around grief enough and with relatives currently unwell I wasn’t sure about seeing this one, however the movie addressed the emotional topics with grace;
  2. The movie also explores grief in a new way. Is asks, would you want to watch what happens to your loved one after they pass? Would it comfort you knowing you can visit them?
  3. Vincent Cassel and Guy Pearce are yet to disappoint me;
  4. The story is based on director David Cronenberg personal experience of losing his wife;
  5. I’d suggest it’s not for anyone currently on the grief train.
