Having lunch on the balcony of a beachside café … in spring. There are several reasons for this …

The sun hasn’t hit its straps yet and the winter chill has left the breeze.

With the temperature hovering around 25 degrees you actually feel like eating, unlike 40 degree summer days when an order of ice with a side serving of slushies is all your inner furnace can handle.

The sky still has enough clouds in it to make the sunsets interesting (yes if you arrive for a late lunch and sit on the balcony, the rhythmic waves will have you so entranced that you’ll still be there for sunset).

Yesterday I popped into Barchetta in North Cottesloe and, it being a Thursday not a flat out Friday, I was rewarded with a table on the balcony.

The threat of summer and  the whiff of bikinis in the air had me opting for a salad. I chose the squid salad with cherry tomatoes, red onion, capsicum, chilli, salad leaves and quinoa.
The fresh salad eased my conscience, while the quinoa added some of the bulk I’d been eating throughout winter. It was the perfect transition meal. The huge portion meant I had no room for anything else, not even a coffee.

The outlook was, as always, beautiful and calming, especially as the beach was still devoid of body- beautifuls.
Even the toilet has a great view.

It’s always good to see staff eat from the same kitchen as you, and even better when it’s the owner. One of the perks of owning a restaurant is you can order your favourite meal, even if it isn’t on the menu. Looked good to me.

I haven’t been to Barchetta for a while and I’m pleased to report that the food and service were both great. It continues to be one of my ‘go to’ places to celebrate the end of a large project or just take some time out to gaze at the ocean.

And so as  I sloth on the couch at home there’s only one thing left to ponder … if I’ve had salad for lunch can I have chocolate cake for dinner?
